The Pope thinks the internet is a mixed blessing, touting its utility as an open forum, but warning against becoming lost in the virtual jungle. Prophet and Pope agree?
LDS.org is stuffed with articles both praising The New Familysearch website and warning against Pornography. Cyber-peril has united old foes. Religion is now about guiding disciples correctly, rather than bashing all foreign sects with claims to divine authority. Now all we need is for believers to realize the war is over.
"Bashing" other religions is inherent in any that claims to the "true" way, since this automatically means that other religions are lesser and inferior.

ReplyDelete"Bashing" may not be equivalent to disagreeing. It is not necessary to be angry just because of disagreement, and anger is what makes bashing.

James, you and your alliteration...
ReplyDeleteI think the religious 'bashing' zealotry tends to be part of a feedback loop in the human psyche, what with enjoying feeling smugly superior and all.
I think I'd tag the article 'suddenoutbreakofcommonsense' and agree with hoping the zealotry (think anti-Mormon (a term whose existence I find somewhat amusing), think Crusades) will fade with time.
I think any thoughtful adherent to a religious code must feel a little anxiety about the Internet.
